The Filey Foundation of the UCM is a friendly, forward looking, group of women. We share companionship and faith, supporting the parish and wider community. Although based at St Mary's in Filey, we have members from all three of our parishes and beyond.
Please call or email the parish office to find out more.
Set off from St. Mary's 09.30 am. Lunch is booked for 1.00pm. Ask if you need a lift.
Members from Filey Foundation of the Union of Catholic Mothers travelled to Walsingham together with friends from across the diocese. Although the weather was changeable, to say the least, we had two lovely days. Walsingham has a beautiful and peaceful atmosphere all of its own. Each time I visit there are particular places I go to pray; to the beautiful Orthodox Chapel of St Serov and to the Church of the Annunciation. In addition to the official UCM elements of the pilgrimage, we all have time for these personal devotions. My first few hours were spent wandering the village, praying, thinking, and finding joy in the beauty of the place despite the persistent drizzle.
I would characterise our pilgrimage as a wonderful combination of community and solitariness, with each of us choosing the right balance for us. Friendships are renewed and new ones forged with members from across the country. There was a notable increase in the number of younger members present, some of whom had brought young families with them. Many clergy were with us, including our own Diocesan Spiritual Advisor Fr Bill Surplus, and two seminarians. The services were very well attended, with the screens open and participants both inside the Chapel of Reconciliation and outside.
We were reminded that the UCM pilgrimage is not only for members. Friends, family, and fellow parishioners are very welcome to join us. In thinking ahead to 2025, it is our hope that some of you reading this will do just that. My thanks to the UCM Walsingham Committee and all those who serve and work at the shrine. Everyone involved works hard and the result is something very special and very much appreciated.
